Best free stock screeners: useful filters, limits and upgrade costs

A useful free stock screener gives you candidates you can explain. Check its universe, metric definitions and continuing free limits before relying on the results.

Finviz, Stock Analysis, TradingView, TIKR and Koyfin offer different starting points. We checked public documentation on 19 September 2026 and have not tested their paid subscriptions. We make Helmbeam, discussed below as a different discovery and follow-up workflow.

Reviewed 20 September 2026

Finviz for an accessible US-stock screen

Finviz is a practical starting point for screening US-listed stocks using visible filters. Begin with conditions you can interpret, then inspect why each result matched. A low P/E or positive margin says little without its period and definition.

The free service differs from Elite in data access and functions including exports and alerts. Elite was listed at US$39.50 monthly or US$299.50 annually when checked. Its trial requires a card and renews unless cancelled under the stated terms. You do not need that trial to use the continuing free screener.

Stock Analysis for moving from a screen to a table

Stock Analysis combines a public screener with company financial pages. It can suit a workflow where the next step after filtering is inspecting the accounts rather than configuring many charts.

Confirm whether a filter, saved view or download requires Pro. The advertised Pro price was US$9.99 monthly or US$79 annually when checked. The reason to upgrade would be a specific access limit you encounter, not the assumption that paid results are better investments.

TradingView for filtering alongside charts

TradingView's stock screener supports filters and different result views, including tables, charts and heatmaps. It can be useful when you want to inspect market behaviour after narrowing candidates.

Check the Basic plan and the particular feature you intend to use. Standard screening, specialist screening tools, exchange data and alert entitlements should not be treated as one unlimited free bundle. We do not quote one upgrade price because the relevant plan and any market-data subscription depend on the task. Confirm them on the current pricing page.

TIKR for screening and company fundamentals

TIKR combines a screener with financial and valuation research. Its Free plan is US-focused; broader access is paid. Check the allowed filters, saved screens and history for the specific tier.

TIKR's public pricing page contained inconsistent history and saved-screen limits when reviewed. Do not choose it on the strength of one unqualified limit copied from a comparison article. The TIKR review explains which published details need confirmation and distinguishes monthly billing from annual-plan monthly equivalents.

Koyfin for a broader research workspace

Koyfin's official plan guide says Free includes stock screening, while ETF screening begins on paid plans. It also provides market and company-analysis tools with plan-specific limits.

Koyfin displayed Plus at $39 per month with annual billing selected. That is an annual commitment, not a monthly cancellation option. Confirm the currency, total charge, taxes and features at checkout. Its trial and continuing Free access are different; the official help page says the trial downgrades to Free rather than charging automatically.

Check what a filter really means

Suppose a fictional company has positive operating profit of US$8.000m, down from US$10.000m, while sales rise. It can pass a screen for positive operating profit despite deteriorating profitability.

Likewise, a filter for revenue growth may include acquired revenue or a rebound from an unusually weak period. A filter for a low multiple may include a temporary gain in earnings. Use the fundamental screener guide to align periods and definitions before comparing providers.

Ask how missing values are handled. Excluding companies with missing ratios can remove younger or loss-making businesses. That may be intentional, but it is part of your research design rather than proof those companies are poor investments.

Decide whether you need custom screening at all

If you already know the company you want to investigate, a screener may add an unnecessary step. Open its reports and begin with your question. If you want to encounter candidates without constructing filters, Helmbeam's Discover workflow is another option, subject to plan access.

After either route, examine the company in Numbers, check important claims in filings and follow it only if you have a reason to return. Neither a screener match nor a Helmbeam setup is a complete investment case.

3 questions
Which free stock screener should I start with?

Choose one that covers your securities and exposes the filters you understand. Finviz is a US-stock starting point; the other options combine screening with different financial or charting workflows. Test one result against its filing.

Why do free screeners produce different results?

Their company universes, data dates, metric definitions and missing-data rules can differ. Align those before assuming one list is more accurate.

Are screener upgrades worth paying for?

An upgrade can be useful for recurring exports, more saved screens, history or alerts. It is worth assessing only against the particular limitation in your workflow, not as a guarantee of superior stock selection.
