Best brokerage research tools for UK investors in US shares

If you hold US shares from the UK, you want to understand the companies behind them and be able to revisit that work when they report. Your broker may already supply useful financials and research, so test those on a company you know before adding another account.

Compare Interactive Brokers for a choice of research providers and interactive investor for a bundled Research Hub within a UK account. IG supplies screening and event tools; Trading 212 documents in-app company financials. You can also use Helmbeam, our stock-research app, to investigate the business and retain your thesis while your broker continues to hold and trade the shares.

This comparison uses documented research capabilities, not tests inside funded accounts or a ranking of brokerage returns. It covers UK readers investigating US shares, not the full UK-listed market. A provider may offer a broad directory while the report you need is paid, unavailable for your company or difficult to use on your phone.

Helmbeam: keep the company research with you across brokers

Use Helmbeam as a research companion to your brokerage account. Open a covered US company in Snapshot, then use Numbers to examine revenue, operating earnings, progress per share and financial room. With Pro, Discover helps you find candidates and company Research lets you retain notes and saved agent-research briefs. You can return to that record even if your choice of broker changes.

For example, when a US company reports growth, compare revenue with operating margin, revenue per share, cash and debt before deciding what the new result means for the business. Keep the issuer's dollar reporting basis for that work. Then calculate your holding's sterling outcome separately, as the example below shows.

Full Numbers is available with Pro or your applicable free company slot; full Timeline history and Research require Pro. Our first-company walkthrough and agent research guide show how to keep the evidence and your reasoning together. Check coverage for the actual security: this is a US-company research workflow for UK readers, alongside the broker's separate dealing, currency and account services.

Interactive Brokers: examine the research subscriptions individually

Interactive Brokers' UK research directory distinguishes providers and labels services as free, paid or both. That breadth is relevant if you want to choose a particular research source inside the account. It also means “research included” is too broad a description: identify the report you want and check its subscription conditions. Interactive Brokers UK research and news.

Before relying on an analyst report, inspect its date, covered security, methodology and intended horizon. A market commentary feed and a company financial model are different purchases even if both appear in the same directory. Check whether the same information is available on the interface you use away from your desk.

interactive investor: a UK account with a research hub

interactive investor describes its Research Hub as available to customers without an additional research charge. It lists screening, Morningstar analysis and Trading Central tools, including news analytics and fundamental analysis. This makes it relevant for readers who want research within a UK investing account rather than a separate research subscription. ii Research Hub.

Check a US company you already understand before changing your workflow. Can you find the underlying financial periods, see who supplied the analysis and distinguish a fair-value estimate from the current quote? A hub-wide feature list does not establish that every US security has the same depth of coverage.

IG: distinguish company research from trading signals

IG's UK research page describes company fundamentals, market screening, analysis and an event calendar. Those can help you discover companies and keep track of reports. The same site covers several products and account types, so confirm that you are looking at the share-dealing context appropriate to your intended holding. IG UK research tools.

A price alert or technical pattern can tell you that something moved. It does not explain whether operating performance, funding or share issuance changed. Use the event calendar to plan the next company review rather than treat the event itself as a reason to trade.

Trading 212: convenient financials need the same source checks

Trading 212's guidance describes income statements, balance sheets and cash-flow statements in the stock's Financials area, with further quarterly and annual views. It also describes AI analysis for selected popular products, rather than universal company coverage. Financial-statement navigation, AI-analysis coverage.

Use those views as a starting point, then verify an important figure in the issuer's report. A short summary may be useful for orientation but cannot replace the note explaining an acquisition, accounting change or unusual charge.

Give every broker the same US-company task

Choose a company you hold or are considering. Retrieve the latest annual revenue, operating profit, operating cash flow and relevant share count. Record the fiscal year and currency. Open an analyst view and identify which statements are reported facts and which are forecasts. Finally, try the same task on your phone.

If a step is unavailable, record that exact gap. You may prefer to keep the broker for dealing and use an independent filing or research tool for that part. EDGAR remains a primary source for US filings regardless of where your account sits.

Our US-stock research checks for UK investors covers the company-reading process. The question here is whether your broker makes those checks convenient enough to repeat. Readers choosing a US-resident brokerage account should use the separate US brokerage research comparison, where account access and the provider shortlist differ.

Keep the sterling outcome separate from the US-company result

Consider a hypothetical $1,000 holding bought when £1 equals $1.25. Its starting sterling value is £800. If the dollar value later rises 10% to $1,100 but £1 then equals $1.375, the sterling value is still £800 before fees, taxes or distributions. The stronger pound offsets the dollar gain in this example.

This does not mean the company's financial statements should be translated at your purchase rate. Keep the issuer's reporting currency for operating analysis and separately calculate what the holding is worth in your account currency. Then check the broker's current foreign-exchange charges and how it handles currency balances for your account.

Account eligibility and tax treatment require their own current checks. A research page does not establish ISA or SIPP eligibility for a particular security, nor does a US listing alone answer how a distribution will be treated.

3 questions
Which UK broker has the best research for US shares?

Compare Interactive Brokers for its research-provider directory and interactive investor for its bundled Research Hub. IG and Trading 212 are additional choices for screening, events and in-app financials. Check the exact US companies, full reports and devices you need before changing accounts.

Does a dollar gain mean my US holding rose in pounds?

Not necessarily. Exchange-rate changes affect the sterling value. In the example, a 10% dollar gain is offset by a stronger pound before other costs or distributions.

Do I have to use my broker's research?

No. You can use Helmbeam for company evidence, notes and agent research while holding shares at your chosen broker, with issuer filings as the original source. Check the actual security's research coverage and the broker's dealing eligibility separately.
