Best brokerage research tools for US investors: company research before trading

Your brokerage account may already give you enough information to start researching a company. The useful test is whether you can explain the business, examine the report behind a rating and keep the reasoning you want to revisit after the next result.

Compare Fidelity for a choice of research-firm methods and Charles Schwab for Equity Ratings alongside independent reports and screening. If you already use Robinhood, test its company tools against the same task. For continuing research outside the brokerage account, use Helmbeam, our stock-research app, to connect company evidence with your notes and saved agent-research briefs.

A rating is a research output, not a personalised instruction. A tool may be useful even when you disagree with its conclusion, provided you can see the evidence and understand how the conclusion was formed.

The comparison is based on the brokers' documented features, not funded-account testing. It concerns research available to US investors rather than an overall broker ranking: account eligibility, service and dealing costs need their own checks. For UK residents buying US shares, use the UK brokerage research guide instead.

Helmbeam: a company-research companion to your broker

Use your broker for the account and dealing services, and Helmbeam to develop the company view you want to retain. Start with a covered company in Snapshot and Numbers to examine revenue, operating earnings, per-share progress, cash and debt. If you are still looking for candidates, Discover's New Ideas feed with Pro lets you narrow the available companies and open one directly into research.

With Pro, company Research keeps your notes and saved agent-research brief versions alongside that evidence. Ask your agent to investigate the question a report raised, save its findings and explain what would change the thesis. When the company reports again, revisit the earlier case instead of relying on the latest rating alone. Our agent research guide explains the supported setup and permissions.

Full Numbers is available with Pro or your applicable free company slot; full Timeline history and Research require Pro. Our first-company walkthrough shows the company views. Keep our Price lens with its report date, then use a current quote and clearly labelled assumptions when assessing today's price, as the target and EPS example below demonstrates.

Fidelity: compare the research methods, not only the ratings

Fidelity's research-firm directory separates providers and methods, including analyst and quantitative research. That is useful when you want more than one perspective on a company. Its stock-research pages also describe screening and company information. Fidelity research firms, stock research.

Start with one company and open two different approaches. Does one focus on earnings revisions while another develops a longer-term business thesis? Different conclusions may reflect different questions rather than one provider having made an arithmetic error.

Check report availability in your account and whether you can retain a copy or source reference for later review. A summary score without the explanation is less useful when the next result challenges the original thesis.

Charles Schwab: broad research inside the account

Schwab describes research tools available with an account, including Equity Ratings, independent reports, screeners, charts and stock lists. Its own ratings and a third-party analyst report should be read as distinct methods, not combined into an imagined consensus. Schwab investment research.

Use a screen to find candidates, then open the company report and inspect the period, valuation assumptions and risks. The rating's horizon matters: a model designed around a particular outlook is not necessarily judging the same holding period as your thesis.

Schwab also provides guidance on reading equity research reports. It is a useful reminder to examine what an analyst prioritised and where the forecast depends on assumptions. Schwab's research-report guide.

Robinhood: check the current surface, not a remembered subscription benefit

Robinhood's company-detail documentation describes analyst ratings, earnings information and financial views, with limitations by stock and device for some features. That makes it relevant for an existing user who wants to complete basic checks without leaving the app. Robinhood stock-detail guidance.

Inspect the full report you want before choosing a subscription. An analyst-rating summary and an individual analyst's research report provide different depths of explanation, and one does not establish access to the other. Robinhood's current Gold overview is the place to check that subscription's benefits rather than relying on an old comparison's entitlement list.

A compact financial chart can orient you. It may still leave the accounting note, older history or a detailed cash-flow reconciliation to be found in the original filing.

Run the same company task in each account

Before opening another account for research, try a company you know. Find its latest annual statement, identify revenue and operating profit, inspect cash flow and retrieve a research report. Record the fiscal period and the report's observation date. Then test whether you can do the same work on your preferred device.

For the source document, use the issuer's investor-relations site or EDGAR. Save the link beside your notes so a later provider change does not erase the basis of your conclusion.

Mark missing access precisely. “No full report for this company in this account” is a useful result. “This broker has no research” is not justified by one missing report.

Separate an analyst target from your own decision

Suppose a hypothetical report values a company at $60 while its shares trade at $50. The implied upside to that estimate is 20%: $10 divided by $50. It is not a 20% return you have earned or a guaranteed destination for the share price.

Now suppose the report assumes next year's EPS will be $3, while the latest reported annual EPS is $2.50. A price-to-earnings calculation is 16.67 times the forecast or 20 times the historical result at $50. Both can be arithmetically correct, but they rely on different evidence. Keep the estimate and reported result labelled rather than using the lower multiple without explanation.

That distinction helps you read apparently conflicting reports. Ask whether the disagreement is about growth, margins, financing, share count or the multiple applied. A target alone conceals the part you most need to understand.

Decide whether independent research fills a real gap

If your existing broker supplies the statements and reports you use, another paid tool may be unnecessary. If you need deeper history, filing comparison or a maintained thesis, choose a tool for that specific gap. Our stock research tools by task guide maps those categories.

If keeping a company thesis and its evidence together is the missing step, use Helmbeam's Research workflow and compare the next report with your saved assumptions. Retain the source, period and reason for any change, whether the initial idea came from your broker, Discover or another investor.

3 questions
Which US broker should I compare first for stock research?

Fidelity and Charles Schwab are useful starting points for broad integrated research. If you already use Robinhood, test its current company tools against your needs before adding another account or subscription.

Is an analyst price target an expected return I can rely on?

No. It is an estimate based on assumptions. The example's 20% gap to a target is not an earned or guaranteed return; inspect the earnings and valuation assumptions behind it.

Should I buy a separate research subscription if my broker has reports?

Add a research tool for work you want to keep doing. Helmbeam provides a company view, Numbers and, with Pro, notes and versioned agent research alongside your brokerage account. Test the workflow on a company you know and compare what it adds to the reports you already use.
