Best investment-thesis tracking tools: notes, evidence and review history
When a company reports again, you need to remember why you were interested and see whether the new evidence supports that view. A thesis-tracking tool should make the original reasoning easy to find, keep its sources and let you explain what changed without losing the earlier record.
Choose Helmbeam when you want that research beside the company itself. Our stock-research app combines company evidence with your notes, saved agent-research briefs and a Research log of versions. Use Notion for a custom notebook, Obsidian for linked local files, or a spreadsheet for assumptions and scenarios you calculate yourself.
Compare the record you will maintain
| Approach | Useful fit | What you need to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| Helmbeam company Research | Notes and versioned agent-research briefs beside the company's operating evidence | Pro access; approve a compatible agent's read and save permissions when using agent research |
| Notion company database | Repeated fields, linked documents and review views | A stable template, permissions and an export routine |
| Obsidian notes | Linked research kept in local text files | File organisation, backup and any sync/version setup |
| Spreadsheet plus source folder | Assumptions, scenario calculations and comparisons | Narrative notes, source links and saved revisions |
The best choice is the one you will update when new evidence arrives. A complicated template that remains empty is less useful than a short record containing the actual decision and its sources.
Keep a thesis record you can reconstruct
Use the same core fields whichever tool you choose. They let you retrieve the earlier reasoning without relying on memory or a score that has since changed.
| Field | What to save |
|---|---|
| Original case | Why you are interested, in your own words |
| Evidence | Filing link, relevant passage and financial period |
| Assumption | What you expect, the time frame and what must cause it |
| Failure test | The evidence that would make the case weaker |
| Dated update | What changed, what you corrected and what remains unresolved |
For Notion, these can be database properties and a company page. For Obsidian, use a consistent note template. In a spreadsheet, keep a linked narrative sheet beside the formulas. In a company-research app, check that you can retrieve both your notes and the earlier brief rather than only the latest summary.
Helmbeam: keep the thesis beside the company evidence
With Pro, open a company's Research tab and write down why you are following it, the assumption you want to test and the filing behind that assumption. Your notes sit with the company's research, so you can return to the reasoning while examining the latest business evidence in Snapshot and Numbers.
For a fuller investigation, ask your own AI agent to research the company with Helmbeam and save its brief. With the approved read and save permissions, the agent can use company context and earlier research, then retain an updated brief as a new version. The Research log lets you revisit saved versions and notes; the full brief includes the thesis, findings, counterarguments, uncertainties, sources and what would change the view. Our agent research guide explains how to set this up.
When the next report arrives, ask what changed against the original case and keep the new explanation alongside it. This is useful if you want to follow a company's development without rebuilding the research from scattered chats. If you also maintain a custom valuation spreadsheet, link the relevant assumptions in your notes and keep that model as a separate calculation record. Our first-company walkthrough shows the company views.
Notion: structure the questions, then check portability
A company database can give every holding the same fields: original thesis, key assumptions, source date, next review and open questions. Keep the longer explanation on the company page so the table does not reduce the thesis to a status label.
Notion documents exports in HTML, Markdown and CSV, with options depending on the content being exported. Check how your database, attachments and links survive the export rather than assuming a downloaded table recreates the whole workspace. Use a supported export format and restore a sample company record before relying on it as a backup. Notion backup and export guidance.
Version access and collaboration permissions also matter. If another person can edit the same record, retain a clear original decision and use dated updates. An edited page without a visible history can make an old assumption look as if it was always your current view.
Obsidian: keep the notes and the recovery plan separate
Obsidian is relevant when you want research in linked local files. You can maintain a company note, link related risks across companies and keep calculations beside the written explanation. You still need an intentional backup and recovery process.
Obsidian's Sync version history and its local File Recovery feature are different mechanisms. Retention depends on the service or setting, and a sync service is not automatically a complete backup strategy. Check that you can restore an earlier note before relying on it to preserve your original thesis. Obsidian version-history documentation.
This approach fits readers who want control over files and are willing to maintain their organisation. It is less attractive if the maintenance itself becomes the reason reviews are delayed.
A spreadsheet: strong for assumptions, incomplete for the explanation
Use columns for reported results, your earlier assumption and the difference. Link the filing beside the input and keep currency and period in the headings. Save a dated copy before changing a major assumption.
A spreadsheet becomes less helpful when the reason for changing an input disappears. A lower growth estimate may reflect a new competitor, a temporary supply issue or a mistaken original calculation. Those are different lessons, even if all three produce the same revised number.
Pair the model with a short written update explaining what changed. Our guide to building an investment thesis covers the content of that explanation; the tool should make it easy to retain it.
Carry one thesis through a new report
Suppose your hypothetical original thesis says a distributor can grow sales without committing proportionately more cash to customer invoices. You record annual revenue of $100 million and receivables of $15 million, both at year end. Receivables are 15% of annual sales on this simple comparison; this is not a calculated days-sales-outstanding measure.
At the next year end, sales reach $120 million, but receivables reach $24 million. The ratio rises to 20%. An additional $9 million is tied up in receivables while sales rise $20 million. You would inspect payment terms, acquisitions, seasonality and overdue balances before concluding that collection quality deteriorated.
Your update should preserve the earlier assumption: “I expected cash collection to keep pace; the year-end balance now needs investigation.” Add the new filing and the unresolved cause. Do not rewrite the original thesis to say that higher receivables were always expected.
Then set the next check: compare the following report's collections and receivables with the explanation management provides. That is a useful review trigger. A reminder saying only “check stock” is much less specific. The SEC's financial-statement guide explains how operating balances and cash flows connect.
Set a small review routine
Keep the initial thesis short enough to reread before the next report. Record the source, financial cutoff, observation date and two or three decisive assumptions. Add an update when the evidence changes, including a correction if your original input was wrong.
Use agent research to keep that record current. With Pro and approved read and save access, ask your agent to compare the latest available company evidence with your saved thesis and save an updated brief to Helmbeam. For example: "After the next report, compare my saved thesis with the new evidence. Explain what changed, cite the sources and save a new version linked to the earlier brief. Keep the original assumptions visible and flag questions that still need an answer."
You can also put the review on a recurring schedule in an agent app that supports it. For a weekly check, ask the agent to look for new company evidence and save an updated brief when something material changes. Set the timing and instructions in the agent app; the resulting research comes back to Helmbeam.
You can read the updated brief in Research and revisit the earlier case in the Research log. If your agent saves while you are elsewhere, reopening Research or returning to the app loads the latest version, so the work you asked it to do is available alongside the company you are following.
Review after meaningful reports or events rather than changing the thesis every time the price moves. Our thesis review triggers guide helps distinguish evidence changes from routine market noise. The tool's job is to preserve that distinction over time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best app for tracking an investment thesis?
Choose Helmbeam for notes and versioned agent-research briefs beside the company evidence. Choose Notion for a custom notebook, Obsidian for linked local files, or a spreadsheet for assumptions and calculations. Test whether you can retrieve the original case and add a clear update after a new report.
Is a watchlist the same as a thesis tracker?
No. A watchlist identifies companies to follow. A thesis record retains your reasoning, sources, assumptions, risks and dated updates so you can assess what changed.
Should I edit my original thesis after each report?
Preserve the original and add a dated update. Correct mistakes clearly, but keep the earlier assumption visible so you can distinguish new evidence from hindsight.
