Financial statement analysis software: investor tools, accounting apps and finance-team platforms
If you want to understand the finances of a company whose shares you own, you need software that helps you interpret its published results. That is different work from recording your own business's invoices or planning next year's staffing. Choose the tool around the decision you are trying to make.
For public-company research, start with Helmbeam and the issuer's filings. Our stock-research app connects revenue, earnings, per-share progress and funding evidence in Snapshot and Numbers, so you can investigate how the statements fit together. QuickBooks and Xero serve the business preparing the accounts; FP&A platforms such as Anaplan serve the team planning its operations.
Decide whether you are reading, preparing or planning
| Your job | Relevant category | Example starting points |
|---|---|---|
| Compare public-company results | Investor financial-data and filing tools | Helmbeam, EDGAR, TIKR and a worksheet for your own scenarios |
| Prepare statements from business transactions | Accounting and reporting software | QuickBooks, Xero |
| Plan a business's future revenue, costs and cash | Financial planning and analysis | Anaplan or another FP&A platform |
| Assess a financing application | Credit analysis and underwriting tools | Tools matched to the lender's data and decision process |
The final row is especially different from public-stock research. A lending decision may require private borrower information, security details and formal credit procedures. A company-health summary alone is not an underwriting system.
Investor tools: start with the published statements
In Helmbeam, begin with Snapshot to orient your company question, then open Numbers to compare available quarterly and twelve-month revenue, operating margin, reported earnings, share-count and funding measures. You can examine whether profit growth is keeping pace with sales, whether growth reaches each share and how cash and debt are changing around it. Our methodology explains the measure definitions, including the distinction between our Earnings lens and reported net income or EPS.
Full Numbers is available with Pro or your applicable free company slot. With Pro, company Research lets you keep notes and saved agent-research briefs beside that evidence. For example, if reported profit rises while cash weakens, save the question and investigate the cash-flow statement and notes, then retain the explanation for the next report. Our first-company walkthrough shows the views you can use.
For a public shareholder, the raw material is usually the issuer's income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement and notes. EDGAR provides US filings without a research subscription. A financial database can make history easier to compare, but you should retain the original document for definitions, unusual items and corrections. EDGAR search.
TIKR publishes historical statements and related research features with coverage varying by tier. Check the particular company, period and field you need before choosing a plan. A long history is useful only if the definitions remain suitable for your comparison. TIKR coverage.
If you are building your own analysis software, a data API is a further category. Fiscal.ai's API documents standardised and as-reported financials, with source-to-filing access offered as an add-on. That is a technical data purchase whose packages and permissions need checking separately from a retail research subscription. Fiscal.ai API documentation.
Investor software is particularly useful for narrowing a question: why did cash generation weaken while profit rose, or why did revenue grow faster than revenue per share? It should not encourage you to interpret every business through the same ratio without reading the notes.
Accounting apps: create the records for your own business
QuickBooks describes financial reporting built from a business's accounting data, including income-statement and balance-sheet views. Xero likewise describes reports generated from transaction records, with budgeting and reporting functions. Their plan-specific features should be checked for the country and business using them. QuickBooks reporting, Xero financial reports.
These tools are relevant when you need to record invoices, expenses and balances and produce reports about an entity you operate or advise. They require correct inputs and accounting treatment. A polished dashboard cannot fix an invoice recorded in the wrong period or a liability omitted from the ledger.
They are not direct substitutes for a public-company database. Connecting your shop's bank account does not provide a comparable ten-year history of another company's statements.
FP&A: model the business that produces the accounts
FP&A software is aimed at planning, budgeting, forecasting and collaboration across business drivers. Anaplan's finance offering, for example, describes revenue, operating-expense, capital-spending and headcount planning connected to financial statements. Anaplan planning, budgeting and forecasting.
This category makes sense when multiple people need to maintain a business plan, compare actuals with budget and test operational scenarios. Implementation, data connections and governance can matter as much as the displayed reports. It is a different purchase from a personal subscription for researching US shares.
An investor can still build useful scenarios in a spreadsheet. The distinction is scale and workflow, not whether a forecast uses columns and formulas.
Use one example to see why the categories differ
Imagine a hypothetical distributor with $1 million of annual sales and $100,000 of net income. Its accounting system records the sales, expenses, customer balances and taxes that produce the statements. The finance team then plans next year's purchases and staffing using those records.
An outside investor asks a different question: how much of the profit converted into operating cash? Suppose the cash-flow reconciliation begins with $100,000 net income, adds $20,000 of depreciation, subtracts a $50,000 rise in receivables and adds a $10,000 rise in payables. With no other adjustments in this simplified example, operating cash flow is $80,000.
After $30,000 of capital expenditure, the simple operating-cash-flow-less-capex measure is $50,000. That does not mean only half the accounting profit was “real”; it means cash timing, non-cash expense and investment must be explained. The next task is to understand whether the receivables increase is temporary, seasonal or a collection problem. The SEC's financial-statement guide explains why the statements are connected rather than interchangeable.
The accounting app creates the records, the planning system models the operation and the investor tool helps an outside reader analyse the disclosures. Calling all three “financial analysis software” hides the difference.
Check the output before buying the category
Ask the provider to show the exact report or task you need. For public-stock research, that might be five years of a company's cash-flow statements with links to the source. For accounting, it might be a correctly reconciled entity report. For planning, it might be a scenario that updates cash when payment terms change.
Confirm data coverage, permissions, exports, plan limits and the cost of maintaining the workflow. For an outside investor, the decisive output might be a sourced cash-flow reconciliation such as the one above, rather than a newly prepared set of accounts. If the main question is a listed company's funding, the debt and liquidity tools guide narrows the comparison to that job.
You can follow the investor workflow in Helmbeam while retaining the issuer's statement links with your research. Our guide to reading company financial statements explains the reading process; financial statement websites compares source access.
Frequently asked questions
Which software should an individual stock investor use for financial statements?
Start with Helmbeam for the company view and Numbers, keep the issuer's filings for the underlying disclosures, and add a spreadsheet for your own scenarios. Accounting and FP&A systems serve the separate jobs of preparing or planning a business's own numbers.
Can QuickBooks or Xero replace a stock-research platform?
Not for the same job. They generate reports from a business's accounting records. Public-company research tools organise other issuers' published financial information for analysis.
Is operating cash flow the same as net income?
No. Non-cash items and changes in operating balances reconcile the two. In the example, $100,000 of net income becomes $80,000 of operating cash flow after the stated adjustments.
