Best stock-picking apps and services: recommendations, ratings and research compared

You want to find stocks worth your time and understand them well enough to make your own decision. You can start with an analyst's selections, a ranked screen or a company-discovery feed. What matters next is being able to explain why a business belongs on your shortlist and whether its reports still support that view.

We built Helmbeam to help you find companies to investigate and understand the businesses behind them. Start in Discover for candidates, then move into our five lenses, Numbers and the dated company record. If you want someone else's named selections alongside that research, compare Stock Advisor and Alpha Picks; for ranked screens, consider Zacks and TipRanks. The sections below explain what each supplies and how you could use it.

Compare the named services

The shortlist below compares documented outputs, selection methods and update processes. It is not a test of investment returns or a trial of every paid account. That matters because the most useful service for someone seeking two ideas a month can be a poor fit for someone who wants to investigate fifty companies.

Helmbeam: when you want to understand what you might own

With Pro, start in Discover's New Ideas feed and narrow the available candidates using filters such as revenue growth, market cap and liquidity. Open a company directly from its card. If a name already interests you, search for it and begin with the same company view.

In Snapshot, our five lenses connect revenue growth, operating earnings, progress per share, financial room and the expectations reflected in the price at the report date. You can see which part of the investment case needs more work before committing more research time.

Then open Numbers. Compare the available revenue and operating-margin history, inspect share-count changes and stock-based compensation, and put cash beside debt. The benefit is being able to follow the same company questions from one report to the next. A business can sell more while each share benefits less, or become more profitable while its funding position weakens. Seeing those measures together helps you explain the difference.

Use Timeline to revisit the dated company record. With Pro access, Research lets you keep company notes and read saved briefs and their research log; full Timeline history also requires Pro, while full Numbers is available through Pro or the applicable free company slot. Agent research lets your supported, authorised AI agent investigate a company question and save its brief as a version you can revisit. Our agent research guide explains that workflow.

For example, suppose an idea appeals because sales are growing. In Helmbeam, compare that growth with operating earnings and revenue per share. If sales rose faster than the amount attributable to each share, investigate issuance before accepting the headline. Save the question and return after the next report. This gives you a reason to keep following the company, even if the original tip is forgotten.

You can download Helmbeam for iPhone or Android and start with a company you already want to understand. Check its available history and your access to the views you need. Our methodology explains the five lenses and their definitions, including why the dated Price reading must be considered alongside a current quote.

Stock Advisor and Alpha Picks: when you want named ideas

Motley Fool's comparison page lists two monthly recommendations for Stock Advisor and a standard annual price of $199. Offers can reduce the first-year bill, so compare the renewal price with the introductory price. The service is a reasonable starting point if you want a limited flow of company ideas rather than another large screen to manage. Stock Advisor and other Motley Fool plans.

Seeking Alpha separates Alpha Picks from Premium. Alpha Picks supplies two new selections a month; Premium centres on research articles, ratings and discovery tools. Buying Premium because you want the Alpha Picks portfolio would therefore solve the wrong problem. Compare the actual subscription name at checkout, not just the Seeking Alpha brand. Seeking Alpha subscription types.

For either service, read a sample recommendation from beginning to end. You should be able to explain why the company was selected, which developments would undermine that reasoning and how updates reach you. Ask whether repeated recommendations of the same stock count separately in the advertised record, how sales are treated and whether the published result assumes every recommendation is bought on its release date. Those choices can produce a record unlike your own account.

Alpha Picks, for example, describes a model portfolio rather than actual investments made with subscribers' money. Its methodology specifies how entries, exits and reinvestments are simulated. Read those assumptions before comparing a displayed portfolio result with what you could have achieved after your own purchase timing, subscription fee and other costs. Zacks and TipRanks: when you want a ranked shortlist

Zacks provides stock screens, including screens built around its Rank categories. Its methodology uses earnings-estimate revisions and earnings surprises, so the rank is most useful when you want to investigate changing earnings expectations. Read the company evidence behind a change and check whether the ranking's pace fits the time you can give your holdings. Zacks screening tools, Zacks methodology.

TipRanks' Smart Score combines eight categories, including analyst views, insider activity, sentiment, technical measures and fundamentals. Its appeal is the ability to examine several signals together. The next step is to open the components: a high score driven by sentiment and momentum answers a different question from evidence of improving cash generation. TipRanks' explanation of Smart Score.

Neither a rank nor a composite score tells you how much you should own. If three highly ranked companies sell to the same customers, your apparent variety may conceal one shared risk.

Put the subscription cost into your own portfolio

Suppose, hypothetically, that a service costs $200 a year. That is 4% of a $5,000 portfolio, 1% of a $20,000 portfolio and 0.2% of a $100,000 portfolio, before dealing charges, taxes or investment gains and losses. These are cost ratios, not the extra return the service will deliver.

The calculation gives you a practical question: will you use enough of the service to justify that recurring cost? Paying for several overlapping subscriptions can be harder to justify than paying for one source of ideas and keeping a disciplined record of your decisions.

Check cancellation before subscribing. Seeking Alpha says cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the billing period and subscriptions renew unless cancelled; refunds depend on the applicable policy or written offer. Keep the terms attached to your own purchase, particularly when a trial or promotion is involved. Cancellation and refund policy.

Verify one recommendation before following a stream of them

Take one supplied idea and write down the business claim in a sentence. If the claim is that growth will become more profitable, find revenue, operating profit and operating cash flow in the company's report. Check whether share issuance means each share is benefiting at the same pace as the whole company. Then examine the valuation assumptions and the funding needed before the thesis can play out.

Bring that idea into Helmbeam and work through the five lenses: Business, Earnings, Shareholders, Resilience and Price. Numbers helps you examine the available measures behind the case, while your company notes preserve the question you want the next report to answer. Check the filing for detailed disclosures and compare any dated Price reading with a current quote before drawing a valuation conclusion.

You can retain a service's idea without adopting its conclusion. Recording your own evidence also makes the next update easier: you can compare what happened with what you originally needed to happen. Our guide to building an investment thesis develops that process.

Which should you try first?

If you want to find companies, understand what you might own and keep up with their progress, start with Helmbeam. Use Discover for candidates or bring a name you already know, examine Snapshot and Numbers, then write down what you need to learn next. That also gives you a way to test a recommendation from another service.

If you specifically want an analyst's named selections as well, examine Stock Advisor and Alpha Picks samples and their update rules. If you want a shortlist ranked by another model, examine the Zacks and TipRanks screens. Compare what those methods add to the candidates and company research you already use in Helmbeam.

Before paying, confirm coverage for the shares you actually buy, the account tier, renewal terms and whether the research can be retained after cancellation. For UK readers researching US shares, also separate the research subscription from broker availability and sterling costs. If you are still choosing the category, our stock-picking service versus research platform guide follows one idea through the research you would do yourself.

3 questions
What is the best stock-picking service for named recommendations?

Stock Advisor and Alpha Picks are useful starting comparisons because both supply named ideas. Choose by the reasoning, update and sale process, intended holding approach and total subscription cost rather than an advertised return alone.

Are stock ratings the same as stock picks?

No. A rating or screen ranks a broader universe using a method. A recommendation service selects particular names for a stated approach. Both still require you to assess the business, price and portfolio fit.

Is Helmbeam a stock-picking service?

Helmbeam is our stock-research app for finding companies to investigate and following their progress. Discover introduces candidates; our five lenses, Numbers, Timeline and company Research help you investigate them and maintain your own thesis. A service supplying its analyst's named recommendations is a different approach that you can also use alongside that work.
