How to find companies with sustainably high operating margins
To find companies that can keep a high operating margin, compare businesses earning their money in similar ways and follow their results through good and difficult periods. You want to understand why each sales dollar leaves more operating profit, what the company must spend to sustain that advantage and how much progress reaches each share.
Begin with a peer group and a consistent margin history, then use the framework below to test the explanation. In Helmbeam, our stock-research app, Numbers helps you examine available quarterly and twelve-month operating margins alongside revenue, spending and per-share measures. You can keep following the same questions as new reports arrive, rather than relying on a permanent list of today's highest-margin companies.
Define the margin before setting a threshold
Operating margin is operating profit divided by revenue. It measures the proportion of sales left after the operating costs included in that profit measure, before items such as financing costs and taxes outside operating profit. Use the issuer's reported definition and keep any adjusted version separate. The SEC's financial-statement guide explains the income-statement sequence.
Suppose a hypothetical company earns $20 million of operating profit on $100 million of revenue. Its margin is 20%. The next year it earns $21 million on $120 million of revenue: profit is 5% higher, but the margin is 17.5%, down 2.5 percentage points. The company retained less operating profit from each sales dollar, even though both totals grew.
A screen that sorts only by profit growth would miss that change. A screen that sorts only by current margin would miss the earlier level. Keep the amount and the rate together.
Build a peer group that earns money in a similar way
Begin with companies selling similar products or services to similar customers. Compare business mix, distribution model and capital requirements before accepting an industry label as proof of comparability. A software licence business, a reseller and a hardware manufacturer may serve the same end market while recognising very different economics.
Use a threshold to reduce the search universe, not to define quality universally. A 20% operating margin can be unusually strong in one activity and unremarkable in another. Banks and insurers require different analytical conventions; forcing their statements into an industrial-company margin screen can mislead.
Record which companies were excluded and why. That small step makes a peer comparison more useful than a chart that places unrelated businesses beside each other without explanation.
For an illustrative screen, choose one comparable business model, require positive revenue and operating profit, and look for a reported margin above 15% in each of three years. That 15% is a filter you chose, not a universal quality threshold. Keep companies with incomplete histories in a separate review group rather than treating missing figures as zero or quietly excluding them from the explanation.
Inspect the history, including the difficult periods
Retrieve at least several comparable annual periods and the latest interim evidence. Look for how margin behaves when sales slow, inputs become more expensive or the business invests. A single exceptional year may reflect temporary supply conditions, a disposal, an accounting change or unusually low spending.
Microsoft's 2025 annual report supplies a dated calculation example, not a current stock ranking. The fiscal years below all end on 30 June and use reported revenue and operating income in US dollars.
| Fiscal year | Revenue, US$ billion | Operating income, US$ billion | Operating margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 211.915 | 88.523 | 41.77% |
| 2024 | 245.122 | 109.433 | 44.64% |
| 2025 | 281.724 | 128.528 | 45.62% |
The margins are calculated from the unrounded million-dollar inputs in the report. They establish the historical pattern shown, not its permanence or an appropriate price for the shares. Microsoft 2025 annual report, income statements.

Follow a candidate's margin history in Helmbeam
Open the company's Numbers view and compare operating margin with revenue and operating earnings on a consistent quarterly or twelve-month basis. Then examine available R&D, SG&A and capital-spending measures alongside revenue per share and share count. This helps you identify whether the margin change came with stronger growth, heavier investment or a different result for each share, before reading the issuer's explanation.
Full Numbers is available with Pro or your applicable free company slot. With Pro, retain the research question in company Research and ask your agent to investigate what supports the margin and what could weaken it, keeping saved brief versions as you update the case. Our first-company walkthrough shows the views, and our methodology explains their measures. You can also use Discover's available growth and market-cap filters to find candidates, then examine their operating-margin histories in Numbers.
Explain the source of the margin
Read the business description and segment discussion. Does the company have pricing power, a low-cost production process, valuable intellectual property, a recurring customer relationship or a distribution advantage? Look for evidence linking the claimed advantage to actual sales and costs.
Then examine what could weaken it. Customers may substitute a cheaper product, renegotiate large contracts or build the capability themselves. Competitors may reduce prices. A high margin can attract the investment that eventually compresses it.
Separate a good explanation from an attractive label. “Strong brand” is incomplete unless you can show how it supports price, volume, retention or cost. Keep the evidence and the unresolved question beside each proposed advantage.
Check whether the margin is being maintained by underinvestment
Read research, maintenance, marketing and capital-spending disclosures in the context of the business. Lower spending can lift current operating profit while leaving a product, workforce or asset base less competitive later. Conversely, an investment period can depress margin while building future capacity.
Capital expenditure also does not appear in operating profit all at once in the same way as an ordinary expense. Depreciation spreads much of the cost over time. Compare the cash-flow statement and asset notes with the income statement before describing the margin as cash available to shareholders.
There is no universal reinvestment percentage to apply to every company. Ask what this business must spend to preserve its position and whether the disclosures support that answer.
Follow the result through cash and each share
A strong operating margin can coexist with cash absorbed by receivables, inventory or capital projects. Compare cash generation over several periods and explain large working-capital movements. Avoid treating one quarter's cash conversion as a permanent rate.
Next, check the share count. If operating profit grows 10% while the relevant share denominator grows 8%, operating profit per share rises by about 1.85%: 1.10 divided by 1.08, minus one. This is an illustrative operating measure, not reported EPS. Use consistent denominators and read the equity notes before attributing the share-count change to employee awards or acquisitions.
Use the Shareholders and Resilience evidence in Helmbeam to connect the operating record with per-share progress and financial room. Keep our Price reading with its report date, then assess a current quote using your own valuation assumptions. Our good company versus good investment guide explains the reasoning; the quality and valuation tools comparison compares ways to investigate it.
Keep a reusable worksheet
For each candidate, record the peer group, reported margin history, cause of the margin, reinvestment needs, cash evidence and per-share change. Add the risk most likely to compress the margin and the next disclosure that could test it.
Promote a candidate for deeper research when the high margin has a plausible, evidenced source and survives those checks. Keep it under review when the cause is unclear. Rejecting an unsupported explanation is more useful than inventing a reason to preserve a position in a “best companies” list.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a high operating margin?
It depends on the business model and peer group. Use a threshold to find candidates within comparable activities, then examine history and causes rather than applying one percentage to every industry.
Does a rising operating profit mean the margin improved?
No. Profit can rise more slowly than revenue. In the hypothetical example, profit increases from $20 million to $21 million while margin falls from 20% to 17.5%.
Are high-margin companies always good investments?
No. You still need to assess durability, reinvestment, cash, funding, per-share results and the price paid. A historical margin does not establish a stock's value or future return.
