Best free stock-research tools: what you can do without a subscription
You can verify disclosures, inspect company financials and build a research record with free tools. Paid subscriptions mainly change access, convenience and scope.
Start with the work you need to complete, not the largest collection of free accounts. The options below are based on public information checked on 19 September 2026. We make Helmbeam and have not tested the competitors' paid tiers. Continuing free plans are distinguished from temporary trials.

SEC EDGAR and company investor relations for original documents
EDGAR provides free access to US regulatory filings. Search the correct legal entity and open the filing, date and relevant exhibit. A results announcement attached to a filing can contain different information from the main form.
Company investor-relations websites can also provide releases, presentations and financial reports without a subscription. For non-US issuers, use the appropriate filing regime and exchange or regulator. A company's explanation is useful evidence, but management's interpretation is not independent verification.
This is the most important free layer: it lets you check what a paid dashboard or article is describing.
Stock Analysis for a first financial lookup
Stock Analysis makes company financial and statistics pages available publicly, alongside screening tools. Use those pages to find a trend, then check material or surprising figures against the filing.
The free and Pro versions have different history, download and other limits. Pro was listed at US$9.99 monthly or US$79 annually when checked. You do not need that subscription merely to begin using public company tables. Do not assume a displayed estimate is a reported result.
Finviz for narrowing US-listed candidates
Finviz provides a free screener, company pages and market views. It is useful for turning a broad idea into a manageable candidate list. Record your filters and what each measure means.
Free access is not the same as Elite. Exports, alerts, real-time functions and other paid capabilities have separate access conditions. If the free screen answers your occasional research question, a paid upgrade may add little to that particular task. See the free screener comparison.
TIKR and Koyfin for limited continuing access
TIKR offers a Free plan for US-company research, while paid plans expand access. Its pricing page showed conflicting financial-history limits when checked, so verify the exact lookback you need before relying on it for a historical study. Our TIKR review records that limitation.
Koyfin documents a Free plan with stock screening, a limited financial-history view and portfolio functionality. Paid tiers extend research and portfolio capabilities. Its temporary trial should not be mistaken for the continuing Free plan: a feature visible during the trial may not remain available afterward.
These services can reduce manual work, but their limited free scope may matter if you need many years, global companies or repeated exports.

A notebook or spreadsheet for the part no provider can supply
Record why the company interests you, the source, your assumptions, the counter-case and the next disclosure worth checking. These are your judgments; a financial database cannot reconstruct them after the fact.
For example, a product announcement might lead to a question about repeat orders. Save that question before the next report, then append what it actually disclosed. This makes it harder to remember an uncertain prediction as something you knew all along.
Build a small free workflow before upgrading
Use a public table or screen to find a question, verify it in the filing and save a dated note. Return when the company publishes relevant information. If that process works, identify the particular bottleneck a subscription would remove.
Possible reasons to pay include longer history, larger report allowances, recurring exports or portfolio analysis. A subscription does not guarantee better decisions, accurate predictions or returns. Compare the ongoing price and renewal terms with the task you actually perform.

Yes. Public filings, investor-relations documents and free financial pages support substantial research. Paid tools can make particular tasks more convenient or extend data access, but they do not replace understanding the sources.
Is a free trial the same as a free plan?
No. A trial temporarily exposes paid features. A continuing free plan has its own limits. Check what access remains afterward and whether billing begins automatically.
When does a paid research subscription make sense?
When it solves a recurring, identified problem such as missing history, export limits or a portfolio-analysis need. Test that task first and compare the ongoing cost, coverage and renewal terms.
